Nirmala Sitharaman says telecom department actively engaging with firms

BENGALURU: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday stated the Telecom division has been actively participating with telecom firms over the problem of statutory dues and he or she would wait to listen to its choice.

Post the courtroom’s newest verdict, it should solely be correct to attend and listen to from the division involved, she informed reporters right here when requested whether or not the federal government was mulling reduction for the telecom firms after the current Supreme Court orders directing them to clear the dues.

“The department has been actively engaging with telecom companies, immediately after the orders and subsequently also after the review so the department is fully in touch with the companies and I will wait to hear from the department or on behalf of the government from the department, so that we know what is the position that the department wants to take on the matter,” the Finance Minister stated.

The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a plea by telecom companies together with Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea Ltd for extension within the cost schedule and requested them to deposit an estimated Rs 1.47 lakh crore in previous dues for spectrum and licenses by March 17.

Some telecom companies have stated they have been already fighting mounting losses and debt and the extra legal responsibility has raised considerations of them defaulting on current loans.
